Chapter Eleven

I forgot about my ribs and concussion. Meg made coffee—better than I made it—and looked over the contents of my refrigerator. She settled for two frozen chicken pot pies and refused to talk to me while they were baking in the oven I’d hardly ever used. We ate them in silence, staring at each other, and she was right, the food and coffee helped. I no longer felt half dead—more like a third. Sitting up seemed like heavy bag training, only I had been used for the heavy bag.

As she took her last bite of crust and sauce, she finally answered me about the gun.

“It’s mine,” she said. “It’s the one I keep in a hideout holster under the dashboard. I found it lying on the seat this morning, and it had been fired since I last cleaned it. Didn’t take too much imagination to see the setup. So I dumped it.”

“Your other gun?”

She shrugged and moved her coat to show me that she was still wearing her sidearm.

“Any other guns we should worry about? Rocket launchers in the trunk?”

She gave me a quirky grin. “Sue me. I overcompensate.”

“I can alibi you most of the time.”

“Peyser’s not going to let that get in the way. And there are periods where I’m unalibied, you know it as well as I do. Want some dessert? You’ve got ice cream bars in the freezer.”

“Not for me. Look, Peyser’s not the one I’m worried about, he couldn’t do real police work if he was handcuffed to Joe Friday. But Gentry’s in this now, and he’s coming for you,” I said, and took another sip of coffee. Meg scooted her chair back from the table, went to the freezer, and pulled out an ice cream bar. She sat down again, unwrapped paper from hard chocolate coating, and then nibbled a bite. Another one. I watched her in utter concentration.

She knew I was watching. A smile warmed her eyes. She took another bite. “Dan.”

“Yeah?”

“It’d probably kill you right now.”

“I know,” I sighed. “Let me have my fantasies.”

“Just so long as I don’t have to hear them,” she said. “It’ll take them a while to think about looking for me here, I think we’re okay for a while.”

“Not that long. Gentry’s no fool. He knows you haven’t got too many places you can go to ground here. Where’s your Lexus?”

“Still behind the Dairy Queen, as far as I know,” she said. “If they haven’t impounded it yet.”

Which they would have, if they found the gun in it. She had no car, no friends in town except me, Rosa Galvan, Dolores Sanchez, maybe a very few more. It was just a matter of time.

Meg took another bite of her ice cream. “I was just thinking about Gentry,” she said. “Did you know he protected me after the acquittal? There was a mob outside the courthouse that wanted to beat me to death, and he put himself in front of me. Not because he believed I was innocent, because the court said I was innocent.
